Affiliated Media Inc., the holding company for MediaNews Group, whose newspapers include the Denver Post and several Southern California papers, plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company said Friday that it would file a reorganization plan already approved by lenders in a bid to emerge from bankruptcy more quickly. Among MediaNews' California publications are the Daily News in Los Angeles, the Long Beach Press-Telegram, the Daily Breeze in Torrance and the Pasadena Star-News.

San Francisco Chronicle (Big Spin Division): The once-mighty Voice of the West suffered (again) the steepest decline in circulation among U.S. newspapers — and then announced that this was a good thing. Now that the circulation has dropped 300,000 from the time I started there, it has a “more healthy” audience, the publisher said. If only the same could be said of the newspaper.

While not all of those jobs will be lost overseas, those workers will face wage pressures. -- Hewlett-Packard has asked many of its EDS employees to take 50% pay cuts. Even the most pro-offshoring report, written by McKinsey Global Institute's Diana Farrell, which asserted that the U.S. will be better off with offshoring, concedes that American workers will experience major losses in wages and jobs. Offshoring is a major structural shift in the way the economy works. Alan Blinder has called it a shift equivalent to the industrial revolution. Ponder that! What needs to change so that companies reject outsourcing...
